In hold’em, the first step is to get the game started, and for this the players put out a particular amount of money. ‘Posting the blinds’ is the frequently used expression for this play. In the following step, the croupier shuffles the cards and deals two cards face down to every player. A normal deck of 52 playing cards is used. After the deal, there is the initial round of wagering. This sequence is typically referred to as a "pre-flop".

After the first betting round, the top card of the deck is tossed aside. This discarded card is the "burn card", and this is performed to guarantee that there is absolutely no dishonestly. The next 3 cards are then revealed face up on the poker table. These cards are referred to as ‘the flop’. Now comes a second round of betting, after that the dealer burns a further card and flips one more card onto the poker table. After this, competitors can use the sixth card to form a 5card poker hand.

A further sequence of wagering happens, and in a number of types of poker, here is where the bet size increases. There is another round of throwing away a card, and a final deal of a card face-up on the poker table. This is known as the "river". Players can now employ any of the five cards on the poker table, and/or the 2 cards in their pocket, to create a 5card poker hand.

To wrap it up there is an additional round of wagering. After that, all the remaining players begin to display their hands. This is called the "showdown". Clearly, the player who shows the highest hand wins. When players have equal hands a sharing of the winnings is considered.

Holdem is a simple game to learn, but to achieve expertise one needs a large amount of practice.
