Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has increased in popularity so quickly.

Omaha/8 starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting follows where players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many entrants get confused. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize exactly three cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical notion in almost all poker games.

The lower hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.

While it seems difficult at the outset, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of play simply enough. Since you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha Hi-Lo offers an exciting range of betting options and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals battling for the high hand, as well as a few shooting for the low.
