Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he liked taking part in numerous card games at a young age. He found himself getting very competitive in the above-mentioned card games while competing against his dad. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a little bit and relocated to New York to compete in some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were tough as he would play many hours and do not win most times. He earned some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He judged he possibly could improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to acquire more rest and focus more on the game.
The real advancement in his skills happened when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would frequently challenge each other. He had access into some of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would sharpen his logical thinking techniques. Howard used these strategic ideas in the game of NL hold’em.
He also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was an excellent student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper decision. He told Annie to move out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the following decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
