Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has grown in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha hi/low starts just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A round of betting ensues where players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. One more sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the players have either called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The players will need to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where many entrants can get baffled. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must use precisely three cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same notion in just about every poker game.

A low hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem complicated initially, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental nuances of the game easily enough.
