Gus Hansen experienced a wonderful year on the WPT where he was the only one to achieve final game in 3 of the events. Gus Hansen has appeared on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he paid $400, 000 to play. You may remember one of the largest pots in big stakes poker recorded history against Daniel Negreanu. Hansen won a huge pot with 4 of a kind against Daniel’s full house. Gus has made many televised poker appearances and is thought to be one of the strongest players around the world. While participating in online poker, another side of Hansen has been seen. He regularly competes in the 200/400 NL max buy in of Forty Thousand dollars. Hansen generally buys in for the minimum of Sixteen Thousand dollars and gambles very poorly. He waits patiently for a decent hand and then pushes all-in. I believe Hansen is an excellent poker player but not even close to the everyday players at 200/400no limit. Unless he is bankrupt, he has absolutely no reason to play at the table with the minimum buy in.
Playing for the min takes most of the skill out of big stack poker. Gus is accepted to be 1 of the best poker players anywhere in the world but he cannot buy-in for the total dollar value. I think tv can skew our view of the real world every now and then. The greatest poker players anywhere in the world may be guys you have won’t have heard about.
